Hello and welcome to this second lesson!
In the first lesson, you’ve learned to introduce yourself. In this lesson, you will learn to say that you are from someplace. You will also learn to use the word “not” in Hindi.
“From” in Hindi is “से /se” (pronounced like the English word “say”).
So, “I am from America” in Hindi is “मैं अमेरिका से हूँ / main America se hoon”.
You may be having a doubt now as to why “se” came after America. It is because the prepositions in English are postpositions in Hindi, and so “se” comes after “America” in Hindi.
Examples:
I am from Australia – main Australia se hoon – मैं ऑस्ट्रेलिया से हूँ
I am from a village – main gaanv se hoon – मैं गाँव से हूँ
I am from south – main dakshin se hoon – मैं दक्षिण से हूँ
I am from the income tax department – main income tax department se hoon – मैं इनकम टैक्स डिपार्टमेंट से हूँ
Now, “not” in English is “naheen / नहीं” in Hindi.
So “I am not Rani” is “Main Rani naheen hoon / मैं रानी नहीं हूँ”. Generally “naheen” comes before the be verb.
Examples:
I am not Ravi – main Ravi naheen hoon – मैं रवि नहीं हूँ
I am not a singer – main gaayak naheen hoon – मैं गायक नहीं हूँ
I am not an Indian – main Indian naheen hoon – मैं इंडियन नहीं हूँ
I am not from Dubai – main dubai se naheen hoon – मैं दुबई से नहीं हूँ
I am not angry – main naaraz naheen hoon – मेँ नाराज नहीँ हूँ
I am not from a wealthy family – main ameer parivaar se naheen hoon – मैं अमीर परिवार से नहीं हूँ
Your turn now! Go ahead and say where you are from in the comment box below. Also, say who you are not. Just use the English word if you don’t know the Hindi word for profession and mood (main doctor naheen hoon).
