Lesson 28 – Simple Future Tense

Lesson 28 – Simple Future Tense

August 21, 2021

The simple future is a verb tense that’s used to talk about things that haven’t happened yet. In Hindi, sentences of future tense can be formed by adding appropriate suffixes to the root verb. Refer to the table below:

SubjectMasculine suffixFeminine suffix
मैं ऊँगा - oongaऊँगी - oongee
तूएगा - egaaएगी - eegee
तुमओगे - ogeओगी - ogee
यह, वहएगा - egaaएगी - egee
हम, आप, ये, वेएँगे - engeएँगी - engee

Note:

To get the feminine suffixes, add ई ee to the masculine.

All masculine subjects in plural end in एँगे enge.

If the root verb ends in half consonant sound, then the half consonant sound merges with the future suffix.

Example: दौड़ (daud) + ऊँगा (oongaa) = दौडूँगा (daudoonga) – will run

जीत (jeet) + ऊँगी (oongee) = जीतूँगी (jeetoongee) – will win

The following three verbs are exceptions and take different forms as below:

Subjectले - le - takeदे - de - giveहो - become

छू choo (touch), पी pee (drink), and जी jee (live) are shortened to chu छु , pi पि, and ji जि before adding the future tense suffixes.

Example: पी pee (drink) becomes पिएगी piyegee (will drink)

It is common these days to write पियेगा – piyega (will drink), खायेगा khayega (will eat), जियेंगे – jiyenge (will live) with य ya. But the correct and preferable forms are those with ए: पिएगा – piyega (will drink), खाएगा – खायेगा khayega (will eat) जिएँगे – jiyenge (will live)
